An original Colt Aircraft MG40, marked "COLT AIRCRAFT MACHINE GUN — BROWNING PATENTS — CAL .30 — MANUFACTURED BY COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG CO, HARTFORD, CONN., U.S.A." — a Colt-built derivative of the Browning AN/M2 aircraft machine gun, presented here on a Cal. .30 M2 tripod mount with accessories.
About the Colt MG40: The MG40 traces its lineage to John M. Browning's water-cooled M1917, developed into the air-cooled M1919 and, in specialized aircraft form, the AN/M2 — a lightened variant with a thinner barrel and receiver built for high-speed fixed and flexible mounts on WWII-era aircraft, capable of a substantially higher rate of fire than ground-gun variants. Colt manufactured its own version of this aircraft-pattern Browning as the MG40, chambered in .30-06 and other calibers, before the type was eclipsed by the larger .50-caliber M2. This example is fitted to a period Cal. .30 M2 tripod mount, complete with period ammunition cans, a canvas belt, and timing gauge accessories.
This example retains its factory data plate with Colt's Patent Fire Arms Mfg. Co. address and patent markings, finned/slotted barrel jacket, dual spade-style wood grips, and correct M2 tripod with elevation and traversing mechanism.
