An original U.S. Thompson Submachine Gun, Model of 1928 A1, manufactured under contract by Savage Arms Corporation for the Auto-Ordnance Corporation of Bridgeport, Connecticut — the legendary "Tommy Gun," one of the most iconic firearms of the 20th century.
About the Thompson M1928A1: Designed by John T. Thompson and first patented in 1920, the Thompson gained early notoriety during the Prohibition era before being formally adopted by the U.S. Army in 1928. Chambered in .45 ACP and fed from box or drum magazines, it uses Thompson's distinctive Blish-lock blowback action. With the outbreak of WWII, Savage Arms of Utica, New York became the primary wartime manufacturer alongside Auto-Ordnance itself, producing the bulk of the roughly 562,000 M1928A1s built before the design was simplified into the M1/M1A1. The M1928A1 retains the finned barrel, Cutts compensator, and vertical foregrip that define the classic Thompson silhouette, and served U.S. and Allied forces throughout WWII.
This example bears the Auto-Ordnance Corporation Bridgeport markings, "U.S. MODEL OF 1928 A1" receiver stamp, and Savage-pattern serial prefix, along with its original finned barrel, Cutts compensator, wood stock, pistol grip, and box magazine.
